Shade Trees...

These are the big guys!  The trees listed below need some room to put down roots and spread their branches. They are the large, stately trees that will eventually provide you with shade and possibly a place to hang a hammock! If you have a smaller yard or are limited on space, consider planting an ornamental tree which has a smaller mature spread.

Ash (Fraxinus)

 

Autumn Purple Ash

Height: 35'-40'

Spread: 30'-40'

Fall Color: Maroon with a lighter yellow interior. This tree is one of the first to color up in the fall. When it does, it looks like it is glowing from the inside out.

Other Notes: Seedless variety. Upright rounded habit. Open branches offer a nice structure even in winter.

Patmore Ash

Height: 35'-45'

Spread: 30'-40'

Fall Color: Yellow

Other Notes: Very hardy seedless variety. Rounded habit.  This is a green ash.

 


Catalpa

Western Catalpa

Height: 40'-50'

Spread: 20'-25'

Flowers: Creamy white blooms, in late spring/early summer, are orchid-like in appearance. Followed by long green-bean looking seed pods.

Fall Color: Briefly Yellow

Other notes: Leaves are very large and heart shaped.  Broad rounded habit with age.

 


 

Cottonwood (Populus deltoides)

Siouxland Cottonwood/Poplar

Height: 70'-90'

Spread: 40'

Other Notes: Fast growing. We only sell the "cottonless" type. Rounded shape with slightly larger leaves than the typical cottonwood.  As with their relatives, Aspen trees, the shimmering leaves catch light and have a distinctive 'whisper' when the wind blows. Likes moist soil. Caution: Susceptible to wind damage, site where limbs cannot do damage.

 


Hackberry (Celtis)

Height: 40'-50'

Spread: 35'-40'

Fall Color: Yellow

Other Notes: A hardy, drought resistant tree. Light green foliage and corky ridges on bark. Rounded vase-shape.

 


Honeylocust (Gleditsia)

Sunburst Honeylocust

Height: 35'

Spread: 30'-35'

Fall Color: Golden Yellow

Other Notes: Seedless and thornless. Light green fern-like foliage is tipped with golden bursts of new growth. Open, spreading branches create dappled shade.

Linden (Tilia)

Littleleaf Greenspire Linden

Spread: 30'-35'

Flowers: Creamy-yellow fragrant flowers in early summer.

Fall Color: Yellow

Other Notes: Heart-shaped green leaves. Pyramidal to oval growth habit.

Maple (Acer)

Autumn Blaze Maple

Height: 50'-60'

Spread: 40'

Fall Color: YES! Orange-red.

Other Notes: Dense, oval shape. A cross between a silver and a red maple.

Crimson King

Fall Color:  Deep maroon

Other Notes:  Maroon red color all season on an oval shaped tree.  Slow growing shade tree with very dense foliage.   (Acer platanoides - Norway Maple)

Deborah Maple

Fall Color: Reddish-purple spring leaves turn dark bronze-green in summer and bronze-yellow in fall.

Other Notes: Dense, broad oval shape. (Acer platanoides--Norway Maple)

Emerald Queen

Fall Color:   Yellow

Other Notes:  Performs well under challenging urban conditions.  Deep green leaves in season change to yellow in Fall.  A fast grower with an oval shape at maturity.  (Acer platanoides--Norway Maple)

Silver Maple

Other Notes: Fast-growing. Vigorous roots...plant away from driveways. Upright oval shape. Silvery backs of leaves. (Acer saccharinum—Silver Maple)

Scarlet Oak

Height:  60'-70'

Spread:  30'-40'

Fall Color:   Crimson red

Other Notes:   Upright spreading branches on a loosely pyramidal tree.  Dark, glossy green leaves in season turn bright red in Fall.

Planetree (Platanus acerfolia)

Variety: 'Bloodgood'  -- London Planetree / Sycamore Planetree

Height:  90'

Spread:  60'-70'

Fall Color:  Yellow

Other Notes:  Wide, spreading rounded canopy.  An excellent choice for urban situations.  This tree tolerates adverse soils, heat and drought, air pollution.  Beautiful cream, olive, and brown exfoliating bark.  Best in larger landscapes due to its large size.  Dark green foliage in summer.
